THOMPSON, Arthur 29 Sep 1899 1 Oct 1947
S/O Pulaski Citizen: Virgil Andrews and Harless Knight, both of Lauderdale County, Ala., were bound over to the grand jury Monday on charges of murder in the death of Arthur Thompson, 48 year old Minor Hill farmer, whose body was found on Puncheon Road near his home about 5 o'clock Wednesday night, October 1. Testimony introduced at the preliminary hearing before General Sessions Judge J. M. Abernathy, showed that Thompson had died of a broken neck and that he had been with Andrews and Knight on a drinking spree. Upon the delivery of Thompson's body at Pulaski Funeral Home, E. A. Hendrickson, funeral director and embalmer, discovered the man's neck had been broken. An autopsy performed later that night by Dr. W. J. Johnson and J. U. Speer confirmed that fact, and it was the opinion of doctors that death had been instantaneous. Coroner J. Roy Pittard and his jury decided at Friday mornings inquest that Thompson came to his death by violent means at the hands of persons unknown. Andrews and Knight were apprehended at their homes in Alabama, returned to Pulaski and lodged in the county jail early Thursday morning by Sheriff Campbell Rosson and his deputies. The case is expected to be heard in the October term of court, in approximately two weeks.

WOODWARD, Lesley H. 3 Jun 1883 30 Dec 1918
H/O Vera Jane Crabb {married 26 Dec 1909 in GCT*} S/O Richard Winfield and Eliza Newton Woodward Copied from The Pulaski Citizen: John Crabb shot and instantly killed Leslie Woodward on the road near their homes in the fourth District Monday morning. There were no witnesses except Mr. Crabb's father and a boy, and no details are known except Crabb's story of the shooting. His story is about as follows: Crabb and his father were driving along the road in a wagon when they met Woodward, who accosted Crabb in a violent manner and started to draw a pistol. Crabb jumped from the wagon on the opposite side and drew his pistol. The men began shooting at each other and advancing toward each other. Woodward shot three times and Crabb twice. As they came close together, Crabb grasped Woodward's pistol and held until Woodward fell dead, releasing his grasp on the pistol, which Crabb carried to his house. Both of Crabb's shots took effect, all three of Woodward's missed. No pistol was found on or near Woodward's body, but he had on a pistol scabbard and had some 32 caliber cartridges in his pocket. This pistol which Crabb said he took from Woodward was a good 32 caliber pistol. Crabb had a cheaper pistol of 38 caliber. The two men lived on opposite sides of the road about a mile from Minor Hill, and it is supposed they had become suspicious of each other in connection with rumors about wildcat liquor. Woodward's house was searched Saturday night, but no liquor was found. It is supposed he became angered and suspected that Crabb was in some way responsible for the search being made. Crabb says Woodward came to his house about 11 o'clock Sunday night and called for him, but he did not go out to meet him. Crabb was placed under arrest and landed in jail Monday evening. A preliminary trial has been set for Saturday.

WOODWARD, Richard Winfield 21 Jul 1863 27 Dec 1897
H/O Eliza Newton S/O Richard Jasper and Lucinda Holt Woodward Copied from The Pulaski Citizen: Monday afternoon Ace Foster and Felix Woodard driving wagons in opposite directions, met about seventy-five yards from Marbut's store in the fourth district of the county. It is said a feud had existed for some time between them, but Foster turned out to one side and Woodard passed on toward the store. After passing Foster, Woodard spoke to some boys by the roadside using profane and obscene epithets in reference to Foster. Fosters' son, Morgan, a young man of 17, then began cursing Woodard, who said he wanted no trouble with a minor and passed from his wagon into the store. Young Foster also went in to Dr. Gaston's office. Mean-time Ace Foster left his wagon and returned to the store and when Woodard came out, they went at each other and engaged in a regular fist fight. While this was in process, Morgan Foster came to the door and seeing his father and Woodard fighting, ran up with a pistol and fired, the ball taking effect just above Woodard's left eye and producing instant death. Deputy sheriff Ben Aymett and Jim McGill were passing on other business and met some men about two-hundred yards from the store who told of the killing which had just occurred. The officers hurried on, saw the dead man, asked who killed him and where Foster was. He had gone to his home near by and officers followed, Aymett going up to the front of the house and McGill to the rear. Two shots rang out in quick succession, and Morgan Foster was a prisoner with a pistol shot wound through the side of his face and neck. The ball entered the back of the neck, a little to one side, and passed through below the ear toward the cheek bone. McGill is reported to have said Foster was running to get away and at the same time snapped his pistol over his shoulder at the pursuing officer. The wound was bandaged with a handkerchief and a messenger sent for a doctor. Tuesday Foster was doing very well with chances in favor of his recovery. We have endeavored to give the facts in the case, just as we get them, and as usual give no expression as to whose fault, or whether the shooting was justifiable, until the evidence at the trial proves or disproves these statements.
