Thomas Reed Sr., the progenitor of the Aspen Hill Reed family, first came to this county in about 1807 per James McCallum's historical accounts. He brought his young family here from Kentucky, although son Thomas Jr. was born in North Carolina in 1796 per census records. The elder Thomas died in Limestone Co., AL in 1836. His son Thomas Reed Esq. who remained in Giles County throughout his life married a woman named Amy. It's widely believed her last name was Cox although there's no hard source for that information that I've found. She was born in Kentucky in about 1799, and was likely the sister of Parmenus Cox another resident of Giles County who was born in 1805 in Kentucky. They may have been the children on a Samuel Cox Sr. who can be found in the county in early records. There may also have been brothers named Fulker and Samuel. Thomas Reed Sr. is believed to have had two daughters in addition to son Thomas. One is known to be Susannah Reed Covington of Limestone Co., AL married to James Covington. That family moved from Kentucky to Alabama in about 1820. The 1850 Limestone Co. Census indicates Susannah was born about 1789 in Kentucky which would seem to contradict the Reed family's move from North Carolina to Kentucky sometime after Thomas Jr. was born in 1796. However, this is the only census with birth information for Susannah is listed in it, so its accuracy is solely dependent on the knowledge of whomever gave the census taker information. If they only knew the family came from Kentucky, they may have errantly assumed Susannah was born there. Thomas Reed Sr. most likely had another daughter, per his will, who was married to a Joseph Moore of Limestone County. The will cites unnamed children of Joseph Moore. Subsequent estate records in Limestone County for Thomas Reed Sr. reference a James Moore who must be a grandson. Unsourced information has this daughter of Thomas Reed Sr. being named "Hetty." She was alive in the 1830 census, but had died before her father's will was written in August of 1834.
