John W. Shannon a third Corporal of Capt R. L. Evans Co. I of the 53rd Regiment of Tennessee Volunters, born in Giles County in the state of Tennessee, aged 26 years, 6 feet 2 inches high sallow complexion, grey eyes, light hair and by profession a farmer, was enlisted by Jno. R. White at Lynnville Giles County Tennessee on the 2st day of December 1861. (Taken from Pay Voucher dated 4/22/1863 at Holly Springs for pay from 7/3l/1862 to 10/20/1862 @ $13.00 per month.)

Roll of Prisoners of War: Sent from Camp Morton, Indiana to Vicksburg, Miss to be exchanged, dated 8/28/1862, and is shown as being captured at Fort Donaldson on 2/16/1862 and is noted as being sick.

Register of Payments to Discharged Soldiers: Discharge 4/22/1863 by Geo. Dashiell.

He is buried in the Old Highsmith Cemetery near Luling, Texas - but across the river in Guadalupe County. John W. Shannon is the son of James and Eleanor 'unknown' Shannon, Giles Co., TN.
