The Sad Demise of Campbell Graves
of Giles Co TN and Limestone Co AL

Campbell was born 1801 probably in Giles Co TN. There is no documentation
that I know of to prove his parentage. However, it seems clear to me that his
parents were John Graves born ca 1775, probably in Granville Co NC, who died
in Giles Co TN bef. 1820 census. Nothing is known of when and where John Graves
died.

John Graves married Ann Campbell born August, 1778 Hawkins Co TN, d May 14,
1840 Giles Co TN. She is listed on the Giles Co TN 1820 census as widow
with 8 children. Ann Campbell Graves is buried at Shane Cemetery in Maury

from Limestone Co AL listing all of Campbell Graves children by both
marriages and where they were living in July 1866.

Limestone County Historical Society member, Faye Axford, wrote book
"To Lochaber Na Mair": Southerners View the Civil War, wrote in 1986
[$12.00 cost and very interesting diary format]. In it there is
discussion of Campbell Graves being a Parson. He had a horse stolen
and was unable to get it returned to him. He finally went to Athens
where the Union Army was still attached as the war was just ending
and asked for their help. The soldiers rode all over town with
Campbell and found the horse theft. He was imprisoned at Nashville,
TN Prison. The townspeople were very distressed that Campbell has
always talked like a Confederate man yet went to those Union men for
help. Campbell had his horse returned to him but was found lying in
the road the following day, dead with two bullet holes in his forehead.

It was a war that divided the entire country and pitted families against
their own. Every one suffered. May God protect us from war among our
selves ever again.
