We know from the 1830 census that Thomas and Amy Reed had more sons than we can account for. They were presumed to have died young. Based on this Bible entry, perhaps one of these young boys was named Thomas and died in 1839. Then, when they had another son in 1840 or 1841, they named him Thomas also. Just a guess ...

This Thomas, Jr. is believed to be the 10 year old Thomas we see as Thomas and Amy's youngest son in the 1850 census. He's also in the 1860 census as a 19 year old young man with them, but you'll notice that when Thomas Esq. wrote his will in 1866, son Thomas is not mentioned anywhere, nor are any children of his. I had always presumed he had died without having married or had children, but can't explain why we can't find him in the Whitfield/Reed Cemetery with the rest of the family.
