He married ELIZABETH "BETSY" LANE February 24, 1820 in Garrard Co., Kentucky, daughter of MARTIN LANE and COURTNEY SEVILLE. She was born December 03, 1802 in North Carolina, and died January 24, 1863 in Pulaski, Giles Co., Tennessee.

From "A Brief Sketch of the Settlement and Early History of Giles Co., Tennessee" p, 125: Thomas K. Gordon was the first Colonel elected in the new Regiment and Richard H. Allen and James Simmons the Major. He served as a representative in the Legislature of Tennessee in 1829 and again in 1835. Residences include Giles Co., TN; Buford Station; Brick Church neighborhood; "Mont Gordon" home near Buford Station.

On July 28, 1991, a dedication ceremony was held at the Brick Church Presbyterian Church in honor of Thomas Kennedy Gordon for his service in the War of 1812. A plaque was erected. Thomas Kennedy Gordon was a friend of Andrew Jackson.

From the "Nashville Tennessean Magazine," April 18, 1948: At the age of 18 he was a Captain in the militia, and when he was 22 Governor Willie Blount commissioned him "Lieutenant Colonel," Commandant of the regiment of Giles Co. in the militia of Tennessee at Nashville 21 June in the 38th year of our independence and in the year 1814.

Mont Gordon was built about 1809 and was a real mansion in its day. It belonged to Gordon Topp, Thomas Gordon's grandson, when it burned.

Elizabeth and Joseph decided to get married just two weeks before the courts were organized in Giles Co. thus going to Maury Co. to get their license. They were married at the widow McNutt's home by John Lindsay, Esquire. Elizabeth was only 15 years old. They later moved to Mississippi.

Of eight sons, two died in early youth and one was mortally wounded at the battle of Ft. Donelson or the battle of Blue Licks during the Civil War.

His will was dated October 7, 1885, probated October 16, 1890 in Giles Co., Tennessee, Will Book B, p. 565, gives $500 to son R.J. Gordon (Robert James); to daughter Nancy M. Laird $500; to son John C. Gordon $500; to D.C. Gordon (Dewitt Clinton) $500; to A.R. Gordon (Andrew Ruthven) $500; to E.A. Bugg house and kitchen furniture; to children of A.R. (Andrew Ruthven) Gordon, Annie Catherine and Bertie Gordon, $100 for education; to grandchild D.L. Gordon $500 and bed and furniture; Executor D.C. Gordon; witnesses J.M. Lemard and W.A. Rothrock.

At this time it is not clear why he has the title of Major, but due to his date of birth and his lineage, one can only speculate that he fought in the War of 1812. Residences: Paris, Bourbon Co., Kentucky; Williamson Co., Tennessee; and finally Giles Co., Tennessee.

Anderw returned to Giles Co. in 1878 to celebrate the 80th birthday of his brother, John. Andrew was said to have moved to San Gabriel, Texas.

On the 1870 US Census for Williamson Co., Texas Andrew is listed as living in Circleville, Williamson Co., Texas. Dwelling #1086.

The following is from a letter I was lucky enough to have gotten a copy of.

This is the story of a plot of bounty land, from the time it was granted April 6, 1841, until December 20, 1963. The first owner of this land was Conrad Eigenauer, a German, who at the time of his death in 1836, was fighting in the Texas Army against the Republic of Mexico in a battle near Colita. This land "artificate" was given to his heirs in payment for $75 that Eigenauer had loaned the Republic of Texas and for military services rendered. At this time this land was selling at about $1.20 � per acre. It was located about two miles from the community of Hare on the San Gabriel River bottom and considered choice land.

Eigenauer's next of kin were his two brothers, Jacob Eigenauer, a highly learned man, and Wilhelm Eigenauer, who could neither read or write and signed his name with an "X". These brothers lived in New Orleans and had died before the estate could be cleared. The land was then left to the next of kin who lived in a small farming village near Hidlebourg, Germany. The administrative powers were signed over to a lawyer in New Orleans. This lawyer was to obtain clearance from all of the other heirs, then sell the land as he saw fit. The land was sold to Andrew Gordon, but later reclaimed by James Mason, who said the documents were forged. It was found that the deeds had been forged and the land was then set up for sale again. Andrew Gordon bought the land by paying the taxes for five years back as they had not been paid due to the forged titles. The money had then been refunded to Gordon so he bought 773 acres of land for five years back taxes, which amount to $17 a year.

Andrew Gordon was known to many as Major Gordon. During the Civil War, Major Gordon trained soldiers for the south at this place. This was an ideal place as it had plenty of water, trees, and was away from the main field of battle. Major Gordon also built a "grist" mill on the San Gabriel River. This was run by slaves, as it was about four miles from the main house. The slaves had a small settlement built on Turkey Creek between the San Gabriel and the big house. There is a graveyard where the slaves were buried; this is still standing today.

The old Gordon house is still standing. It is a large two-story house with large white pillars in front with a gallery for both floors. The house was built with square nails and these have not been replaced. The floor sills are six inches by ten inches and one is made of solid black walnut. Today these are as good as new. The broad ax that was used to split these sills is in the possession of the deceased Dr. Johnson in Thorndale, Texas. The ax is still setting on his desktop. The house had two rooms upstairs and two downstairs. There is a fireplace in each room and a winding stairway between the two floors. (I have no idea how many times I have slid down the banister. For generations of my family, the children have slid down that banister.) The house took one year to build and is approximately 125 years old. The lumber was hauled from Houston by oxen.

In 1949, a Negro woman died. She was over 100 years old and was born into slavery under the Gordons. She was later freed after the Civil War. The Negro lived in Bartlett, Texas, until her death.

When Andrew Gordon died, the 773 acres of land were split up equally between his children. The estate was not divided according to land, but value of the land. John C. Gordon received the house, the orchard, the cattle yards, and 165 acres of the estate. The rest of the estate was split up and sold. It was stated in the will that all of the estate be given tax free (as inheritance taxes). It was also stated that a plot, 75 feet square, be set aside for a family burying ground. This was not to be sold, transferred or cultivated by anyone at any time. The tombstones are still standing. (I have a list of all the names in the cemetery on another sheet of paper.) The last will and testament of Major Andrew Gordon was written on October 13, 1883.

During Major Gordon's occupancy of the place there was an epidemic which took the lives of many of the residents of the place during the early 1870's. When this epidemic struck, the daughter of Seneca Carter, a New York Doctor, was visiting the Gordons. The girl came down with the epidemic and the Doctor and his family came to nurse the sick daughter. The Doctor became sick and both he and his daughter died along with Andrew Gordon and several others. All of these are buried in the cemetery behind the house.

My uncle, Clyde Arledge, bought the house and 165 acres of the land from Malcum Gordon, the grandson of Andrew Gordon, around 1935. Cecil Arledge, brother of Clyde Arledge, lived there for seven years. Then my grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. R.B. Arledge, lived in the house and worked the land until my grandfather's death. The land was sold to Corabel J. Crockett in 1960 and is still held by her. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shiller are living in the house and working the land.

Addendum: The land now (1999) belongs to Thomas Bullion, a Lawyer in Taylor, Texas.

In "Land of Good Water" by Scarbrough, on page 451, in the material on San Gabriel, a town East of Laneport. San Gariel was assigned third post office in county 13 Aug 1850. Postmasters were: Thomas J. ALLEN; John G. GORDON -1853; Andrew GORDON - 1856. Scarbrough says that on 21 Feb 1856, the postal records were marked <<changed to Milam Co>>

J. T. Rothrock in a sketch written about 1918-1920 recalled that when the Lanes married, they settled on a fine thousand acre tract about a half mile from the church. Here all the children were born and grew up. In 1856 or 1857 Thomas J. decided to move to eastern Texas where land was cheaper and he hoped to settle his family around him there. In this he was not wholly successful; two of his elder daughters married and stayed in Tennessee. The remainder of the family moved to Lamar Co., Texas near Bonham.

Sam served in the "Battle of New Orleans" in 1815 as a private in Captain Owen's Company, Tennessee Volunteers when he was a young man of 21 or 22. The following incident was told years later by his great nephew, Judge Francis Gordon "Frank" Caffey, who was one of the twin sons of Dr. Hugh William Caffey and his second wife, Alabama Gordon, daughter of Major Francis Gordon and Elizabeth Wells Caperton.

"After the battle was over, the defeated English soldiers were preparing to return to England. (This same English Army, incidentally, was the Army that defeated Napoleon at Waterloo the following June).

"Old Uncle Sam Gordon, originally of Spring Hill, Tennessee, who later settled in the community of Gordonville, Lowndes Co., Alabama, wasn't quite through with the War. He had one last pleasure of which to partake. And soon that pleasure came walking down the street... it was Lord Pakenham himself, (the British Commanding General) who was the brother-in-law of the Duke of Wellington.

"The story goes this way: When he saw Lord Pakenham, he fired and shot the British Commander right between the eyes. Later, when he was asked whether he could substantiate his belief that he had been the man who killed the great General, Gordon remarked: "I know I did it, 'cause I drew a bead on him, and I never miss at that range."

Lord Pakenham was then pickled in a keg of rum and shipped back to England on the same ship with the defeated soldiers to receive in his native land a burial befitting to a man of his position.

"And you know," said Judge Caffey, "the soldiers on the boat got so thirsty between here and England that ....well, by the time they arrived in England, Old Pakenham was in quite a bad shape." Samuel was one of the five brothers to found Gordonville, Alabama.

It is a tradition that they were with General Andrew Jackson in his Alabama campaigns and in the battle of New Orleans. He was one of the five brothers to founded Gordonville, Alabama.

Notes for DAVID GORDON:

He was one of the five brothers to found Gordonville, Alabama. He had land grants in Autauga County and Lowndes County in 1832.

One record says that David kind of lost his mind after the death of his only son in the war and the freeing of his slaves who numbered over 100. This information from Susan (Sue) Josephine Gordon, daughter of James Logan Gordon who married Miles Curtis Childers.

According to the 1868-1870 estate settlement papers for David Gordon, he died intestate with estate insolvent. He owned 977 acres of land, an old dwelling on market Street in Benton, with gin house, scrue, outbuildings, "the Temperance Hall Lot" in Benton, Stock in the schoolroom, land at Gordonville on the Mt. Willing and Benton Road, and a gold watch valued at $75. He had sold 10 acres of land in Benton to Milton P. Harrison (a physician) for a residence prior to his death. No mention is made of his wife, Lucy W. Harrison Gordon, in settlement papers, so she evidently preceded him in death. Frank L. Johnson was named administrator of his estate. He was later removed as administrator by order of the court 18 Mar. 1875. He owed the estate $2,285.87. The court appointed Guardian Ad Litem of the minor heirs (children of James Caperton Gordon and Susan Ann Lochridge Gordon) who were living in Spring Hill, Maury Co., TN at the time, denied the allegations that the estate was insolvent and would have to be sold to pay the debts: "I deny all allegations in the foregoing petition to sell the land to pay the debts of David Gordon and require strict proof of the same," H. R. Rugeley. But the estate was auctioned off on the 1st Monday in Dec 1870. Land was sold to pay the debts. (His metallic burial case cost $150.00)

From Deed Book 5, pages 256-257, Lowndes Co., Alabama, Probate Office, Lowndes Co. Courthouse, Hayneville, Alabama. On February 21, 1844, David and Lucy W. Gordon deeded the "five acres, more or less," described, to the Ash Creek Baptist Church "through their deacons Moses Pierce and Alfred Crawford..in consideration of $30." It was signed by David and Lucy W. Gordon, witnessed by James O. Miller and Zebulon Rudulph, Sr. Another sworn statement on 3-4-44 attests to the signatures on deed and names the longest side of the property for "convenience in placing the burial ground." The latter statement is signed by David and Lucy W. Gordon and Zebulon Rudulph, recorded 3-18-44. Zebulon Rudulph (Sr.) was a deacon at Ash Creek Church for many years.
