Descendants of William C. HARWELL
WILLIAM C. HARWELL
ARKANSAS DESCENDANTS
by
Roger Harvell
William C. Harwell was in the Weakley/Choates Creek area of Giles County prior to
his move in the late 1850s to Izard/Baxter County, Arkansas.
The primary sources for the information on the family of Lead Hill, Boone, Ar, are
Reba Lee (nee Bell) Gann, Ida Fern (nee Bell) Chaney, June Bell, and Onus Neil Bell,
descendants of William C. Harwell.
Generation 1.

on Charles.
Married second Adeline Hancock? 1849/1850, per 1850 Giles , Tn, Census.
v. Cintha C. born:C1864.
Notes on William C. Harwell:
William C. Harwell was the son of Samuel and Nancy (nee Westmoreland) Harwell.
I have had more than a passing interest in this family because there was
an unknown male my Samuel Harwell/Harvell's age in 1820 in their household.
I believe it possible that my great-great-grandfather Samuel was raised with
these children. ~Roger Harvell
Here is an abstract of Samuel's 1849 will naming William C. and his siblings:
GILES COUNTY WILL ABSTRACT 1814-1900

and west of Pineville where his son George W. would settle.
Generation 2.
2. ELIJAH HARWELL (William C.,Samuel, Ambrose, "Little Sam", Samuel of Prince George)
born:C1837.
Married Mary (Susan) Warren born: C1834 daughter of Robert Monroe Warren in
Johnson , Ar, on 10~9~1855.
Child of Elijah and Mary Harwell:
i. L.(evisa) J.(ane) Harwell born: C1858.
Notes on Elijah Harwell:
E-mail from Michael Flanagan:
- From a newly-published county history of Newton Co AR:
"My third great-grandfather, Robert Monroe Warren, b.1787 in North Carolina, arrives
in Newton County in the mid 1840s with what appears to be only part of his family.
Prior to the 1850 census, no record of Robert has been found. On the 1850 census he
is farming in Van Buren township with his son Nathaniel G. (Green?)age 17 and
daughter Mary Susan age 16. No additional information has been found on Nathaniel.
Susan, five years later, married Elijah Harwell and was the mother of Levisa
{MHF Note: Louisa?} Jane Harwell who married Marion Casey."
Later in that same book, Marion Casey is identified as Francis Marion Casey, son of
Uriah b.c1830 in TN and wife Jane. "Moses Casey was born sometime between 1810 and
1815, a son of Ambler and Polly Ellison Casey. Moses Casey and ELizabeth Coe were
married on May 27, 1829 in McMinn County TN ... Elizabeth Coe was a sister of Martha
'Patsy' Coe, the first wife of Jesse E. Casey, both being children of Stephen and
Betsy Hart Coe ... Per a history book on Newton, AR, Uriah obtained a piece of land,
for free, because of Native American blood. Thus far, no record has been found to
substantiate this information. Living on the other side [of Uriah's mother Elizabeth
on the 1850 census for Newton Co.] was Robert M. Warren, who Elizabeth married some
time between the 1850 and 1860 Newton County census."
What I find most interesting about this is the certainty that Elijah's surname was
Harwell - Elijah s/o William C., but shown as Harvil in AR census records. Like
Moses D.B., they evidently knew the original name, whether the county officials
did nor not.
[Moses Daniel Boone mentioned was the son of my ancestor Samuel Harwell/Harvell,
the first of my line in Arkansas.~RDH]

3. GEORGE W. HARWELL (William C.,Samuel, Ambrose, "Little Sam", Samuel of
Prince George)
born:C1843 died before 1880.
Married Mary A. "Polly" Taylor born: C1836/1837.
Children of George W. and Polly Harwell were:
4 i. George W. Harwell born C1866.
5 ii. William C. Harwell born September 1866 died 1-12-1945.
6 iii. Frederick W. Harwell born C1869 died 1905.
Notes on George W. Harwell:
This George W. Harval is, in fact, George W. Harwell the son of William C.
Harwell. We don't have William C. recorded on an Arkansas Census, but know
from BLM records that he bought land near North Fork in Izard ,
Arkansas. George W. lived out his life near Pineville in Izard County.
Because of the incorrect birth year we at first thought that this was my
Sam's George. He was born in 1841 not 1849. Here is his family in 1870:
Pg. 204 6/23 Franklin Township - LaCross

George W. WM 4 AR
William C. WM 3 AR
Frederick W. WM 2 AR

William C. and Frederick W. married sisters, Dora and Idela Puryear,
daughters of Robert B. Puryear and moved to Boone , Ar., as
adults and both are buried near Harrison, Arkansas.

7 i. Alfred Shelby Harwell born 1884.
Notes on the family of George W. Harwell b:C1865....
Email from Charlotte Arrington:
Hi Roger,
I am very excited to get this information and extremely interested in anything you
know about George W. Harvell (Harwell) and Amanda Charlotte Wood Harvell (Harwell).
Amanda had her first child in Calico Rock, AR, in about 1882 (my grandfather, Robert
Walter Wardman Rivers.)
The father (we believe) was a Dr. Robert Wickliff Rivers. He was 40 and Amanda was
around 15, 16 or maybe 18. We don't think they were married. Then in 1884 Amanda
gave birth to Alfred Shelby Harwell (we thought Harwell and that's what all the
papers say). Amanda didn't say much about any family (have no idea who her parents
were) and nothing about George W. It says on Alfred Shelby's death papers that he
was also born in Calico Rock, AR. The next time we hear of Amanda (or find her)
she has moved to Ft. Worth, TX and is married to a James Wilshire. They had three
daughters. Next she is a widow and moves to another house in Ft. Worth, TX. She
has with her my grandfather and Alfred Shelby (young adults) and her youngest
Wilshire daughter, Tessie. The other girls were only like 14 and 15, but are not
there (this according to my grandmother's diary). So maybe they married early?
The house widow Amanda moved into was next door to my (to be) grandmother, Troy Jim
Woodruff. It was at this house that Troy and my grandfather, Walter Rivers, fell
in love and got married. Then Amanda married a Bennet Webber (from Germany). He
had a grown daughter, Gertrude Webber. Alfred Shelby ended up marrying Gertrude
Webber! Alfred became a preacher and pastored up a few early churches and then was
the first pastor at the Hot Springs Baptist Church. After a number of years he took
a church, I believe in TN, became ill and came back to Hot Springs, where he died.
His mother, Amanda, had died first and is buried in the same cemetery (can get you
this information if Connie does not send it). Amanda was burried in an unmarked
grave and through my friend, Connie, my family got her a headstone. I am her
namesake, Charlotte Rose Arrington, so it seemed the right thing to do. I will
ask my cousin Harvey of Albuquerque to send you any information he might have on
Alfred ("Uncle") who was much beloved. And expect the information and pictures from
Connie. Whatever she does not have, I will send. Can you tell me anything about
George W. and Amanda? The story goes that Amanda and her brother, Thomas, were
living with an aunti or grandparent in or around Izard County, AR around 1881 when
she became pregnant with my grandfather. We do not know anything about Thomas or
who their parents were, more siblings, etc. Would appreciate any information you
might have! What kin are we anyway????? Later and regards, Charlotte
