Martin Raney). The typed chart was made by Walter W. Raney of McCrory AR 26
Apr 1938. A handwritten note on the copy we received says Henry Harrison
Raney mar Martha Ellington 8 Feb 1808. She was b 18 Oct 1783 and d 21 Oct
source. Using census records they were married Dinwiddie Co. VA and she d in
Hardeman Co. TN. This information references an unknown obituary.

All census and court records that we have located indicate his name as Henry G.
Rainey/Raney. The only record where his name is given as Henry Harrison Raney
is in the family history by Walter W. Raney.

He was 23 yrs old and prob mar ca 1808 so they only had one ch in 1810. He prob
had other relatives living with them: 2 younger boys, 1 girl same age as his
wife, and possibly a mother-in-law. One of the boys 10-15 was probably his
younger brother Robert who may have moved with him to Giles Co. TN. Robert
married Sallie Jones in 1819 Bedford Co. VA -- possibly on the way to
Tennessee.

This family would include Henry G. & wife now about 33 yrs old plus one son
now about 10; plus 4 boys and 1 girl born between 1810-1820.
Giles Co. TN 1830 census: 1 m 0-4; 1 m 5-9; 2m 10-14; 2 m 15-19; 1 m 30-39;
1 f 5-9; 1 f 15-19; 1 f 40-49. This would be Henry G. with wife a few years
older than himself. The oldest son is now married and not living with them.
Hartwell Harrison Raney is on the census next door. The four boys born between
1810-20 now have two younger brothers b bet 1820-25 and 1825-30. The girl b
between 1810-20 now has a sister b bet 1820-25.
Land records show Henry G. owned a farm in southern Giles Co. near AL line.
A possible brother of Henry G. was Robert and family who lived in Limestone
Co. AL and Henry G.'s son James L. married in Limestone Co. AL and lived near
Athens AL.
Henry G. sold his land in 1836 and moved to Hardeman Co. TN. Two of his sons
Hartwell Harrison Raney and Thomas G. Raney stayed in Giles Co. through 1850's.

1 f 20-29; 1 f 50-59.
This family would include Henry G. and wife and oldest daughter still
unmarried. The two youngest sons are still living with family.
Henry G.'s first wife (name unknown) died about 1841 in Hardeman Co. TN.
Henry G. married Jane Riley in Hardeman Co. 23 June 1846.
Hardeman Co. TN 1850 census: Henry G. age 63 b VA; Jane age 35 b AL;
Stephin age 3; Sarah age 2.
Henry G. died 1856 and all of his children except two moved to Jackson Co. AR.
The son James L. had stayed in Limestone Co. AL and the dau Susan Winafred
had married for the second time and remained in Hardeman Co. Henry G.'s wife
Jane has not been located in the census.

Notes for EPPS RANEY:
The family chart made by Walter Wilson Raney in 1938 only lists the name
Epps Raney, but that person has not been located on any record in Jackson
or Woodruff Co. AR. A Peter Raney was living next to the four brothers,
Daniel P., Thomas G., Hartwell H. and Patrick Henry in 1860. His name may
have been Peter Epps Raney. This same Peter married Mary Garrett 10 June
1846 in Madison Co. TN. and was on the 1850 Haywood Co. TN census. It is
possible that he stayed near his wife's family rather than moving with the
Raney family to Hardeman Co. TN. Since he named his first son Henry it is
possible that this Peter is the son of Henry G. Raney.

named Elizabeth b AL. This could be Elizabeth Lee. The last three
children are by this second wife.

1838 Case #2340 dated 2 June 1845 John Wooford vs Covington Edmondson,
Charles Frederick and James L. Raney. They were assessed $72.35
damages. Case #2411 dated 6 Dec 1847 DeWoody Turrentine vs
James L. Raney $202.91 + $14.86 damages.

The census records for Patrick Henry Raney are very confusing. Names
and ages do not match from one census year to the next. This family
has been constructed from census records, cemetery records, court
records, and the family info provided by the three Raney sisters in
McCrory AR.
