    Notes for JOHN LEWIS WHITE:

    John was said by his family to have been the black sheep of his family.

    I recall my cousins telling me that he beat his wife with a buggy whip and once beat a black woman on the street with a buggy whip. My father said John had a butcher shop in town and his sons ran his farm. When he came home , he sat on his porch with a rifle in his arms and kept his family including his wife, hid in the cotton and corn plants until he got tired of threatening to shoot them. He was abusive to his wife through out their marriage. When her last child was old enough, Belle left him and lived alone until she died. She was much beloved by her sons. I never knew her only dau. who lived to adult.

    One of John Lewis White's sons, Jack White, has a granddaughter Cathy W. Brown,of Lawrenceburg, TN On June 23, 1996, she sent me family history sheets of Jack's family.

    Sept. 14, 1998, I received a death certificate for John Lewis White from AL signed by Dr. Jackson who treated John for two days prior to his death of Acute circulatory collapse, Urinary obstruction and enlarged prostate. It was signed by John's brother, Ulysses Grant White of Athens, AL. Stated John lived in rural area of Limestone Co. AL when he died and that he was born in Giles Co. AL (error-should read TN)

    Dr Jackson lived in Lester, AL and signed death certificate Dec 3, 1942.

    It stated John was a farmer and some times businessman. That his father was James Monroe White of Lincoln Co. TN. and his mother was Amanda T. Warren of Giles Co. TN.

    McConnell Funeral Home handled his service and he was buried at Minor Hill Cemetery in Giles Co. TN. (McConnell probably of Limestone Co, AL)

    In the fall of 1997, Cathy Brown handled the purchase of a marker for John's gravesite. It was paid by donations of many of John's grandchildren.

    Notes for CARISSA BELLE ABERNATHY:

    She liked to be called Belle. She lived apart from John for many years prior to her death. Her death certificate states that she died of Evolutional Melancholia. Manic Depressive was crossed out. Her husband was very abusive to her all of their married life and she bore him about 17 children. Henry Williams, a family friend, said she was reclusive when he met her in 1936 and she just sat in front of her fireplace without speaking.

    I recall that all of her sons living close by went directly to the cemetery to visit her grave as soon as my father arrived in Florence on vacations. She was beloved by them.

    Her daughter, Etha Mae, said that her father beat her mother with a horse whip and treated her inhumane and she never fought back. She stated that she hated her father.

    I went to view her gravesite in Feb. 1995, and she is buried between her siblings.

    One is a double stone for W. H. Abernathy, 1861-1936 and the other name on that same stone is Inez, 1863-1948. The second stone is a single stone for John F. Abernathy, Oct. 1, 1868- July 19, 1931.

    They are all buried in Florence Cemetery in Florence , AL. In that same cemetery are the graves of Virgil B. Pope Oct.30 1877-Sept.7,1960 and Mattie J. Pope, June 2, 1857 - Mar. 12, 1932. Bonnie Edward White's daughter, Reba, was with me on the day I researched the cemetery and she called my attention to their graves.

    I have a clipping from Florence Newspaper Obituary for Belle sent to me by Belle's great granddaughter, Barbara Strange;

I will leave her on as Taft obviously knew whether he had this sister or not.

    Notes for AUBREY ELMO WHITE:

    Aubrey and Lena divorced in 1951. He moved to Toledo where he was severely injured in a fight and died of a cerebral hemorrhage. His brothers sent for his body to be buried with his family in the old section of Florence Cemetery in Florence AL .along side his brother, Bonnie Edward.

    His death certificate said he died of acute edema of brain due to acute alcoholism. I never knew him to drink in the 16 years I lived in his home. His friend who was an elevator operator in the Toledo General Hospital where he worked said he was dating married women in the local bar. I believe this to be true because he had Christmas gifts in his room for women. Also, his glasses were on a dresser just inside his apartment door and blood splattered . He was half in the shower laying on the floor moaning when another employee living in the same building heard him and came in to check. He had a severe head injury and stated that he had been hit. I am sure that he had been drinking but he was not an alcoholic.

    He and Lena lived common-law until June, 1951. They were married in Maumee, Ohio by Probate Court then.

    Notes for LENA OLA LEMAY:

    Lena married 1. Aubrey, 2. Arthur Hewitt, 3. Arthur's brother, when Arthur died of Cancer. His name was Fred Hewitt.

    Lena died of ventricular fillibration and coronary artery thrombosis and coronary athersceloris and she had hypertension most of her adult life. She suffered a major stroke from hypertension at 34 years old and had a sympathemy performed at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac.. She was born in Arkdale, Lauderdale Co. AL. She was the only daughter who lived to old age.

    Notes for ETHA MAE WHITE:

    Ether Mae married O.W. Wallace and died in Nashville TN.

    She was the one who supplied the information for her mother's death certificate. She never had a child according to Mary Frances Sides White. I had thought she had one daughter? I have since learned that she raised her brother's child as her own, Dewey's Martha Dell.

    Her first husband, O. W. Wallace was called Dink. She divorced him and married Wallace Mc Kinsey. Then she divorced Mr. McKinsey and went back to Dink Wallace. They lived together for the rest of their lives.

    Notes for WALLACE MC KINSEY:

    They were divorced and had no children together.

    Notes for O W WALLACE:

    Etha Mae gave the information for her mother's death certificate and listed her her name as Mrs. O. W. Wallace. Mary Frances White Sides said her husband's name was Dink. Probably a nickname?

    Notes for JEWELL DEE TALLEY:

    Jewell had a good job and a beautifully furnished apartment when she married Bill. She also owned her own car which was unusual at that time. At 83, she was diagnosed with Alzsheimers Disease and moved to Alma, Mi to live with her dau. Billie Joyce Peters. She was a very lovely lady and very good to my siblings and myself as children, especially after our father left us.

    Waters married 1. Helen Green and had two sons, Billy and Jackie. Jackie died of bowel disease and Billy lived in Lapeer Co. MI in 1980. I do not know Uncle Waters 2nd wife's name.They lived in Killen, AL. Uncle Waters may have been named for Jane L. Waters who married James W. White, 27 Aug. 1871, in Bradley, TN. He sister, Elizabeth Waters, married John Lewis White 28 Apr. 1872 in Bradley, TN. I have found the Waters family as far back as the early 1700's living near the White family. Dr. Waters lived nearby and was their family physician.

    I received a letter dated Oct. 20, 1995 from Mrs. Bobbie W. Williams of TN.

    Dear Virginia;

    I was glad to hear from you and sincerely wish I could be of help but nearly all the information I have is included in my lineage chart in Giles County Lineage book that you have already.

    I do know some of the names mentioned in your letter e.g. Noble C. White, postmaster of Pulaski,TN whom I think my father, Edward C. White, said was his first cousin. Another was U.G. White of Athens, AL ( Hardware store owner for many years). I visited in his home several times at the invitation of his daughter, Christine, when I was attending Athens College in 1932-34.

    I do not know the name of their father unless it was the first Clark White. I recall that there was a Clark White Grocery Store in Pulaski for many years and his daughter married a Pigg who also had a store. Their son, James Alton Pigg, was a student at Giles County High School when I taught there in 1938-39.

    William Clark, U.G. and Noble were all cousins of my father but I do not recall the name of their father.

    I am going to send your letter on to my cousin, Paul White, who has done a lot of genealogical research into the White family. He may be able to help you more. He has been trying to find the grave of Carson Bailey White I, our great grandfather, but to no avail. Paul's grandfather was Carson Bailey White II, a brother to my father.

    Have you looked at the census books in the court house at Pulaski ? They have a genealogy room in the Giles County Library which might also be of help.

    Sincerely,

    Bobbie White Williams

    her lineage;

    Bobbie White Williams

    Edward C. White
