Giles County is divided almost equally north and south by Richland
Creek. Though called a creek, it is
really a river and was declared navigable by an act of the
Legislature passed in 1809. The act prohibited
the building of dams or other obstructions that would impede the
passage of boats. This act was
repealed in 1811. The Elk River flows across the southeastern
corner of the county.
