Giles County Obituaries

From the Columbia (Te.) Observer
July, 1847

DIED--In this place, on the 12th inst., Mrs. Martha Adeline Estes, late consort
of William Addison Estes, and daughter of Samuel Gilbert, Esq., of Tuscumbia,
Ala., --aged 34 years and 26 days.

In the varied relations of life, Mrs. Estes presented an example worthy of
imitation. For some years past she had been a member of the Methodist
Episcopal Church; and when death approached, she was sustained by the faith
of the gospel. Though bound to this world by many endearing ties, she
commended with composure and confidence those whom she loved to her Father
in Heaven, into whose glorious presence she expected soon to be introduced.
Not a doubt of her eternal happiness seemed to hover around her mind. So
long as she was enabled toexpress her feelings to her friends, she was
calmly and peacefully relying upon the Savior of sinners, and showed that
they, who trust in the Lord, will never be confounded. Death did not seem
to find her unprepared; but watchful and ready, faithful and submisive,
peaceful and confident, fitted by divine grace to exchange this world of
light and shades for the regions of unclouded and unending glory.

Note: Martha & Wm. I. A. Estes lived in Giles County in the 1840s-50s
period; their son Edwin L. B. joined the Confederate unit in Elkton.

SUDDEN CALL J.W. HASTINGS, KILLED BY ELECTRIC SHOCK
J.W. Hastings, a machinist at the Ford Garage was killed about 5:15 o'clock
Monday evening by a shock from an electric light wire. Mr. Hastings and
all the other workmen in the shop were rushing to get out some autos for
which the owners were waiting. Some of the people in using an extension
light were slightly shocked and when Hastings called for the light to see
what he was doing under a car, the foreman cautioned him to be careful. He
wrapped a rug about the light and took hold of it, but evidently the naked
band touched some part of the bare metal, or possibly the rag was wet making
of it a conductor. The current passed through the man's body and although a
doctor was quickly called and efforts were made to restore him, he did not
regain consciousness. J.W. Hastings was a son of John Hastings, a native
of Giles County and a good workmen (sic) whose untimely death will be
deplored by all who knew him. The body was sent home Tuesday and was
buried at Elkton yesterday. (Researcher's note: John Willis Hastings was son
