I am searching for the parents of my ggf James W. COLE b: Apr 9, 1834 d: Jun 23, 1908. James was married to Edna Ann and they had five children who survived beyond infancy; Eliot, Margaret(my grandmother), Margian, Ella and William. James and Edna Ann were buried in the Mullis family cemetery outside of Cochran, Georgia. I found James and Edna Ann in the 1870 and 1900 Dodge County Ga census reports and in Twiggs County Ga in the 1880 census report. I believe that James must have lived in Tennessee when he was a youth because he enlisted in the 37th Regiment of Stewarts Brigade of the Tennessee Volunteers. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was shot through the shoulder at the Battle of Chickamauga in North Georgia. The wound permanently disabled his arm and he received a fifty dollar a year pension. I found a Henry COLE listed in the 1850 Lincoln County Tennessee Census who was married to Rebecca. Henry and Rebecca had a son named James W. who was the correct age for my James. I cannot verify that this is my James. Henry and Rebecca were listed in the 1860 Giles Coutny Census and a James was listed in the the 1850 Haywood census married to Indy. Thanks for any help you can offer Don Cochran

PHILLIPS - THOMPSON - SHEPPARD Does anyone have any information on John PHILLIPS, NC Line Rev. soldier, who may have come to Giles Co., TN in the early 1800's or was in the part of Giles that later became Lawrence Co., TN. In 1822 John appeared in court in Lawrence Co., TN to apply for a pension. Robert THOMPSON accompanied him. John stated he was about 70 yr. old (b ca 1752). This was the second time the THOMPSON family was involved with John. About Oct 1777 John became ill and was discharged, James THOMPSON picked up his pay in Halifax or Warrenton, NC. This suggested that they may be related to John. Did John PHILLIPS, Rev. soldier, buy land in Giles Co., TN? On 20 Dec. 1791 Joseph PHILLIPS (also referred to as John in the grant) and William SHEPPARD bought 5000 acres (Richland Creek area) in Giles Co., TN. It was not registered until 16 Jan 1807. The land adjoined 2000 acres that Martha SHEPPARD bought. John served under Col. Abraham SHEPPARD in the NC Line. This land was also near Hugh CAMPBELL and Irishtown where four PHILLIPS (from Fairfield, SC) settled.
