Descendants of William White
Part 1
Generation No. 1
1. REV WAR WILLIAM1 WHITE was born January 10, 1755 in Fauquier Co, VA, and died May 06, 1833 in Mulberry, Lincoln Co, TN. He married ELIZABETH UNKNOWN in Co, NC. She was born abt. 1775 in Rowan Co, NC?, and died August 07, 1852 in Mulberry, Lincoln Co, TN. Notes for REV WAR WILLIAM WHITE: William was in the Rev. War. His pension number is S1735 VA. in later life he lived on Mulberry Creek in Lincoln Co. TN. He was born in Fauquier Co. VA and joined the Rev War from there. His commanding officer was Thomas Marshall who was the father of Chief Justice John Marshall. Wm. knew Gen Geo. Washington, and Col Hamilton, Gen's. Wayne and Sumpter. In Feb, 1999, I was accepted into D.A.R. on this William White, no. 788860. Living close to or listed in papers signed by William were James Carr and Joseph Bailey who were relatives by marriage and sons of Stephen Bailey. Also close was Parnack George and James Mc Clanahan. In Fauquier Co. VA, I found the following names as neighbors to William White; Newton Wilkinson, Daniel Warren, Charles Collier, Lewis Morgan, Isaac Crawford, Henry Morgan. Many of William White's descendants carry these names for their first names. William first shows up in Lincoln Co. TN definitely in the year 1820, the second time a census was taken for that county. Though there were two William White's in that county at the same time, only one had children of the right ages to match the known progeny of William and Elizabeth White. There was also a family of Bailey's in the Mulberry community in Lincoln Co, TN but it is not known if or how they were related. After William's Rev War service from 1775-1780, he entered United States service and participated in the siege and surrender at Yorktown, after leaving service in April 1782, he lived in Rowan Co. NC for 30 years according to his pension papers and then moved to Lincoln Co. TN. where he lived at the time of his declaration, 17 Oct. 1832. It is known that this is the William White of Revolutionary service because he is shown in 1800 Rowan Co. NC census with Carr White, undoubtedly his brother and namesake of his son. Fauquier Co. VA records establish a connection with Carr Bailey of that county. Also with Stephen Bailey, father of Carr Bailey Sr. In the 1790 Salisbury District, Rowan Co. NC census, I found William Bailey Sr, James Warren, Thomas Carson, and David, James, Isaac, Thomas and William White living there. Family tradition says that William White and his party of travelers stopped in the Cumberland Gap in the wintertime and staying in Kentucky that following spring to make up a crop before going on to TN. All of his children were supposed to have been born in NC, but this tradition appears to be at variance with the census records of 1850. William bought land in Lincoln Co. TN in 1824 and first appears on the census for Lincoln Co. TN in 1830. There is no will on record nor an estate administration, though it is known with assurance that he died in 1833. His land was sold by his sons, C. B. White and James F. White, 24 June 1837 in Deed Book K-1, p.558. At this time, James was the only one of the two who was of age. His land consisted of 126+ acres on the middle fork of Norris Creek and at the north branch of the Elk River.
TN was part of NC in William's time so his children could have been listed as born in NC or TN and been born in the same place. Lincoln Co. Signed, Sealed and Delivered in presence of, John White, Robert Gibson, Thos. Bailey. Signed by Carr Bailey and Lishea Bailey. Every White family in the early 1700's named a son, William White. Without the first wife's name and the names of the children of the first marriage of my William White, it has been near impossible to trace his parentage earlier than Fauquier Co VA. I suspect that William White, born ca 1730, listed in 1760 roster of Cap't. William Edmonds Virginia Troops out of Fauquier Co VA was the father of my William White. This French & Indian War soldier fought with the famous Indian fighter, Carr Bailey. William White named a son, Carr White. My William White also named a son Carr Bailey White and there have been Carr Bailey White's and those with Bailey as a middle name in every generation to date. The problem in proving this relationship is the inventory of the earlier William taken in October, 1804 Fauquier Co by his son in law, George (Sarah White) Roach of Prince William Co VA and William's neighbor, William Hunton did not list a son named William. The land was sold by George Roach to William Hunton 22 May, 1816 and all heirs were listed. All except Sarah (White) Roach lived in Mason Co KY in 1816. Their mother had evidently died the previous winter to allow land to be sold then. Her name may have been Mary? Children listed were: JOHN White born ca 1758 m Ann Bailey, ANN/NANCY born 1764 m. William Waddell Sr., HANNAH b 1765 m. Thomas Russell James and lived later in Clay Co IN, ELIZABETH m James Bailey, SARAH Roach, JEMIMA/Mima m. George Waddell, and CARR m. Nancy Donaldson, dau of John. My Rev War William White stated in his RW pension application (S1735VA) that he had a brother, John, who entered in Cap't. Sheldon's company who became ill while stationed at Alexandria, VA. William relieved him to go home to recuperate. I have not given up on these two William White's being father and son due to the Carr Bailey White connections and the daughters marrying sons of Carr and James Bailey Sr. I just have not been able to prove it. William the younger may have been a eldest son and already received his share. He would have been living in Rowan Co NC when the elder William died. Notes for Fayetteville Newspaper said " Old Mrs. White died of the flux that was unusually fatal in their neighborhood this year. Her son, James, and two grandsons died of the flux within days of her. One grandson was the child of C.B. White- Sterling Council White. The other was the son of James F.White. S.M. White Bible give year of her death as 1842?. She is listed as Elizabeth in the family Bible. 1850 TN census shows Elizabeth aged 75 living in the household of Samuel Miles who was the husband of Elizabeth's daughter, Martha ( White) Miles. She died in 1852 on August 7. The family Bible record has a question mark after the year 1842 showing the reading was not very clear. She would have been 77 in 1852. Samuel Miles was listed as Li-1189-138 for his home in Lincoln Co. TN in 1850. Children of WILLIAM WHITE and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN are: 2. i. THOMAS J2 WHITE, b. 1801, NC; d. Aft. 1850, prob Limestone C, AL. 3. ii. MARTHA WHITE, b. 1814, NC. 4. iii. JAMES FRANKLIN WHITE, b. August 10, 1816, Rowan Co, NC; d. August 02, 1852, Mulberry, Lincoln Co, TN. 5. iv. Generation No. 2 2. THOMAS J2 WHITE (WILLIAM1) was born 1801 in NC, and died Aft. 1850 in prob Limestone C, AL. He married MALINDA Abt. 1821. She was born 1803 in SC, and died Aft. 1850 in prob Limestone C, AL. Notes for THOMAS J WHITE: See 1840 US census for Lincoln Co. TN p. 44, 1850 US census p. 397.(Li-1560-438). I believe Thomas was a child of the earlier marriage as he was born so many years earlier than his siblings. Thomas's two younger brothers were heirs and adm of father's estate 24 June 1837. Thomas did not assist in selling his father's estate. His younger brother, James F. White sold the land when he reached his majority and was helped by his younger brother, Carr Bailey White. In 1850 Lincoln Co. TN census, Thomas J. and Melinda and three children were living at Li-1560-438. Children of THOMAS WHITE and MALINDA are: i. MARY ANN3 WHITE, b. 1822, TN. ii. JOHN WHITE, b. 1824, TN. iii. STEPHEN A WHITE, b. 1831, TN; m. MARTHA A JONES, October 18, 1850, Lincoln Co, TN. 3. MARTHA2 WHITE (WILLIAM1) was born 1814 in NC. She married SAMUEL C MILES in Lincoln Co, TN. He was born 1815 in TN. Notes for MARTHA WHITE: See US census 1850 Lincoln Co. TN household # 1189, p. 120 for Samuel C. Miles, her husband. Mickey Etu, of AL in May, 1999 said Martha Miles sold land to B.K. White, son of James Franklin White and wife Martha V. Payne. She said B.K White sold land later to Sarah Frances Miles who married William Atwood. Children of MARTHA WHITE and SAMUEL MILES are: i. AMANDA3 MILES, b. 1838, TN. ii. BEATRICE MILES, b. 1840, TN. iii. MARTHA J MILES, b. 1842, TN. iv. WILLIAM C MILES, b. 1844, TN. 7. v. JAMES L MILES, b. 1845, TN. vi. MARY E MILES, b. 1848, TN. vii. SARAH FRANCES MILES, b. 1850, TN; m. WILLIAM ATWOOD. Notes for SARAH FRANCES MILES: 4. JAMES FRANKLIN2 WHITE (WILLIAM1) was born August 10, 1816 in Rowan Co, NC, and died August 02, 1852 in Mulberry, Lincoln Co, TN. He married MARTHA V PAYNE, daughter of UNKNOWN PAYNE and CHARITY. She was born May 06, 1817 in NC, and died April 21, 1891 in Lincoln Co, TN. Notes for JAMES FRANKLIN WHITE: See 1850 US census, Lincoln Co. TN household #663 p. 92. This data was sent by Sue Davis of Minor Hill, TN, a desc. Lincoln Co and Moore Co Cemeteries by Marsh p. 275 White Cemetery, one mile NE of old Loyd's Chapel and West side of Stephen's Creek. Thomas J. White, Martha M. White and Martha V. White, both wives of James F. White. All three buried there as well as 2 infants of Martha V and James F.
James Franklin and his brother Carr Bailey both sold their father's property as soon as James reached the legal age of 21, Carr was still only 19 years old. They sold it in June 1837 and finalized the sale in Dec 1837 in Lincoln Co TN when the grant papers went received by the boys to allow them to sell the property. It was on Stephen's Creek in Lincoln Co TN and sold to G.W. Martin. We need to locate a copy of the grant papers in Lincoln Co TN that arrived there between June and Sept of 1837. The sale is listed in Deed Book K-1, p 356 in Lincoln Co TN. Perhaps the grant will shed more light on the parentage of William White. ore About JAMES FRANKLIN WHITE: Burial: August 1852, White Cem, West/Stephens Cr, Lincoln Co, TN More About MARTHA V PAYNE: Burial: April 1891, White's Cem, West/Stephens Cr, Lincoln Co, TN Children of JAMES WHITE and MARTHA PAYNE are: i. He conveys a portion of the land inherited from his father on Stephen's Creek in the 5th Civil District of Lincoln Co. TN on 24 June, 1837 (deed Bk K-1, p. 556). Notes for WILLIAM CLARK WHITE: Family lore told by David W. Aycock of AL, gr grand son of Ulysses Grant White; William Clark was killed by Union soldiers on Christmas Eve, 1864 because he would not tell them where he hid his livestock. His wife delivered her child soon after learning her husband killed. That child was William Clark (Babe) White Jr. Paul R. White TN also heard this family story. I found 5 children listed in the 1850 TN census living in this Lincoln Co.TN family. John was only 4 months old at that time. In some misc. information sent to me in Sept. 1995 by David W. Aycock was a picture of U.G. White in Partridge, Kansas visiting his Uncle Thomas, son of Clark. Uncle Tom White was a short man with white hair and a hat on and nice clothing with a fiddle in his hand in the playing position standing next to U.G. White who was holding his hat in his hand and dressed in suit and tie. The picture was taken about 1945-1950 per David as U.G. died in 1952. In File Box IX, Filed June 13, 1871, Thomas H. Noblett vs Eliza White and Others; Petition to Review Settlement Thomas H. Noblet represented to the Court that at the August term 1865, he was appointed Administrator of the estate of William C. White, deceased. Mr. Noblet went about with the settlement of the estate. On Sept. 29, 1870, he appeared before W. H. Abernathy, then a Deputy Clerk of this Court, for the purpose of making a settlement of his accounts as such administrator. This account goes on further with his business. Thomas was a personal friend of Clark White as well as a relative. I will add his information here now; ( He was related by marriage below) William Noblit born, 18 July, 1785 in SC, died 20 April, 1862. He married Ann who was born 31 Aug. 1788 in GA and she died 1 July, 1875. Their son was above the mentioned Thomas Hughes Noblit. He was born 8 May, 1812 in TN and died 29 Nov. 1887 at Minor Hill, Giles Co. TN. He married 31 Jan. 1841, Rosanna Clear, born abt 1822 and died 28 Nov. 1889 in Puchion, TN. They had at least one child; Thomas Hughes Noblit Jr. born 2 Dec. 1858, died 13 Nov. 1942 at West Point, TN. He married Josephine Estes White, born 19 July, 1898 at Minor Hill, TN and died 21 Dec. 1937 at West Point, TN. She was a daughter of John F. Paul R. White of TN in Nov. 1995 gave the following info; The Battle of Nashville was fought Dec. 15 & 16, 1864 and when the Confederate Army retreated from Nashville, it did so after leaving Pulaski down the present Highway 11 through Minor Hill and on to Florence, AL where the army crossed the Tennessee River. They were pursued the entire way by the Union army of General Thomas and heavy skirmishing with Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry which was covering the Confederate retreat to place all along highway 11 from Pulaski. It was undoubtedly as a result of this skirmishing that William C. White was killed which is ironic considering the family was of non-slave holding Union adherence who had moved to Giles Co. in the first place to escape the continuing change of Confederate and Union administration in Lincoln Co. TN. My own family branch of the White's has been Republican since before the Civil War. Grandpa Santford Monroe White was Postmaster at Lynnville,TN in 1913 at which time he lost his Postmaster's position. Wilson White of Athens, AL gave my name to his niece, Mickey, who called me Dec. 22, 1995 and gave me the following info regarding above incident; She said W. Clark White and his son, John, were near the barn when Clark saw the soldiers approaching. He instructed John to hide in the barn loft until they left. Mickey said this account was told to Wilson's father by John's widow who said John had told her this account on his deathbed. John told his wife that the soldiers were Confederate and in retreat. They were under the command of Nathan Bedford Forrest. They did shoot W. Clark but the shot did not kill him. The soldiers strung him between two of their horses and literally pulled W. Clark apart before the eyes of the hiding son, John. (not W. Clark's wife who was inside the house). John's widow said John had told his mother and the shock sent her into labor and she delivered young Clark soon afterwards. John did not want his own children to hear these gory details about how their grandfather had died so he told no one until he was on his deathbed when he told his wife. Wilson has John's Bible that has all the children's births listed in it including C.B.White's. Inside the front cover of this Bible, John wrote Zechariah 12 beginning with verse 1. Evidently John felt this chapter described his life as he saw it at that time and the killing of his father. Wilson's father loved to regale the children with stories of his family and Mickey as a teen loved to stop on her way home from junior high school to listen. He told her that the White's arrived very early into Virginia. They would not have survived without the assistance of the Croatian Indians. These Indians told them what to eat and how to live in the wilds when the supply ship never returned to Roanoke Harbor from England. Mickey looked all over for information about those Indians to no avail and finally thought the old man was mistaken. Later in life, she was speaking to someone from the local college who told her they had changed their name to LUMBEE Indians. Then she found lots of information about them and they were in the place she was told. Mickey was also told by Wilson's father that there were actually Dare stones, about 46, placed in the foundations and other places where they would be discovered telling of their trials and tribulations. This story had been around for years and not believed until recent years when the stones were studied more closely and now they are believed by the experts with today's knowledge of aging processing and wording. There was a story about these stones in the 1940 newspaper she said but I did not ask her what newspaper. I will. She said the Lumbee Indians lived around what we know as Robison, NC today. Sue Davis of TN, and a desc of my family, said an interview with Nadine White Robinson said her brother Ash (Ashford) bought William Clark White's farm and William is buried on it. Ash bought this farm from Madge Jackson's sons; Twins, of Dr. Jackson DDS of Lawrenceburg, TN. After Ash died, the farm was sold to Tommy Gatlin who remodeled it and still lived there in Jan. 1996. 1850 Lincoln Co. TN census: William C.
